Cycling

Whilst you’re enjoying your stay at The Edgemoor Hotel, why not treat yourself to the joy of experiencing Dartmoor by bike. Dartmoor National Park is beginning to become accepted as one of England’s premier cycling destinations and with good reason. You’ll find something to suit all levels of ability, from gentle, meandering trips through the unique Dartmoor landscape of pre-historic settlements, forests and moorland, right through to adrenaline fuelled days on truly world class mountain bike trails. It couldn’t be easier, our team of qualified and dedicated guides will collect you from the hotel and transport you by Land Rover to the heart of the moor where, under our expert guidance you can embark on a wonderful, traffic free journey to the famous and historic landmarks of this magical wilderness. We can even provide the cycles if you haven’t brought your own. Amongst our varied and fascinating itinerary of guided rides, we can offer:

Princetown – Ponies and prisons. A unique journey through the heart of Dartmoor. Share this surprisingly flat, easy going trail with the wonderfully wild Dartmoor ponies. See the quarries, whose granite, built much of central London. Enjoy the tranquillity of an endless moorland panorama and reward yourself with a refreshing stop in Princetown, home of Dartmoor’s famous prison.

Grimspound – A journey through history. One of Dartmoor’s best kept secrets, the wonderfully well preserved Bronze Age settlement of Grimspound has stood and watched as man has shaped the landscape through the centuries. As you stand within the impressive stone circle, the evidence of Dartmoor as an industrial centre is all around you. Deep ravines gouge the surrounding valley sides, testament to the once thriving tin mining industry.

Postbridge – High Dartmoor. Visit Postbridge and it’s remarkable stone clapper bridge, then take a trip into the pine scented Bellever forest with a view of the majestic, meandering Dart river. If you’re feeling really energetic, you can climb to the summit of Bellever tor for a breathtaking vista, while the less energetic can enjoy the marvellously easy going forest and moorland trails with eyes peeled for buzzards, adders and deer.

There’s no better way of discovering this unique slice of English heritage than by bike. You’ll cover far more ground, far quicker than on foot and you can return to the hotel safe in the knowledge that supper has been well and truly earned.
