The small town of Bovey Tracey, (pronounced "Buvvy" by the locals if one name is said, or "Bovey Tracey" if both words are used) derives its name from the river Bovey which flows through its centre. The "Tracey" was added from William de Tracey, Lord of the Manor in the 13th Century. The Parish Church is said to have been re-built by Sir William de Tracey as penance for his part in the murder of Thomas a Becket in 1170. Bovey is a pleasant old-fashioned country town - really not much larger than a village. There is a good delicatessen, a Post Office, a chemist, a ladies clothes shop, a book shop, and three banks (Lloyds, HSBC and Natwest) as well as other small independent shops. As you go into Bovey there is a car park on the right, just after the Hand Loom Weavers (on the left) and the Old Thatched Inn. The Tourist Information Centre is located here, so it is quite a good place to start, before walking over the river bridge, to the Devon Guild of Craftsmen, and then on up Fore Street.
The Edgemoor Hotel is literally, as it says, "on the edge of the moor". In fact our hedge is the National Park boundary. However, it is best to drive the first part of the way up towards Haytor to take your first glimpse of open moorland, as there is approximately 1200 ft difference. Dartmoor is actually a granite plateau formed about 400 million years ago which rises up and dominates the centre of Devon to a height of between 1,000 and 2,000 feet above sea level. There are towering granite outcrops, streams, heather and more ancient relics from Bronze Age settlements than anywhere else in Europe.
Exeter is a lovely old city, certainly worth a visit.
The Eden Project is now one of the top ten visitor attractions in the country.
